Human Resources

If there is a record (ie unemployment claims paperwork and Dept of health and human services paperwork) that has no retention information in any publication, how long should we retain the document?

Basically, 4/5 years is the norm for most states. OSHA will require 30 years if the injury was health and safety related.
Here is a great pdf of a webinar performed by Michigan.gov. (I’m assuming you’re referring to MI law)
https://www.michigan.gov/documents/hal/mhc_rm_employee_records_177323_7.pdf
At the end of this pdf there are images showing you how to access MI specific laws on records retention.
We also have a records retention section in our HelpDesk for Human Resources Tool-Kit.
Thanks for reaching out. Have a great day!
