Millennials in the Workplace: How they are changing the game?

How they are changing the game.

How they are changing the game.

As the team of young people called millennials soon become the largest group in the workforce, more attention is being directed to their perspectives, goals, and desires.

Millennial’s most noticeable characteristic is the extensive use of  technology ranging from mobile devices, and communication apps, to modern gadgets, face-to-face meetings and social networking tools.

The younger you are, the more eager you are to devote time and energy into new tools and practices that promise higher productivity and connection. Deloitte Global fourth annual Millennial Survey was just released, and it shows what the aspirations are for millennial’s at work.  In my opinion, the most notable findings from the survey are:

  • Having a “sense of purpose”, as well as working for a business that has a purpose plays a big role when looking for a place to work among millennials. The key is giving people a sense of purpose outside of financial gain. Aligning employee’s performance goals to company values will allow them to feel that their day-to-day work is contributing to a wider purpose.
  • Leadership qualities have been redefined from well-networked, and technically-skilled leaders to strategic thinkers, inspirational, personal and visionaries. They are well-connected by email, text and instant messages having a sense of a world without limits as they can reach anyone from anywhere with just one click.

According to Barry Salzberg, CEO of Deloitte Global, “The message is clear: when looking at their career goals, today’s Millennials are just as interested in how a business develops its people and how it contributes to society as they are in its products and profits.”

These findings show that as a society we are evolving into a greater level of consciousness; we are focusing more on the inside rather than the outside. We are looking to work for places that allow us to have a sense of accomplishment while contributing to making things better for everyone. Millennials foster team collaboration, they seek a challenge and do not like boredom, they like flexibility and balance between life and work.

Millennial generation is happening here and now, and it’s the future of the workplace. It’s is imperative that organizations understand this new philosophy of work, embrace it and believe in it without hesitation.
